Wholesale cannabis sales in BC showed modest increases in late spring, while the province’s direct delivery program showed notable increases.

Cannabis sales in Canada again reached a new high in May, based on the newest sales figures from Statistics Canada.

The total sales in Canada in May 2025 reached $482.3 million, surpassing the previous high of $468.8 million set in December 2024. These sales numbers are seasonally adjusted. Unadjusted figures for May 2025 are slightly higher at $485.4 million. The total adjusted sales across Canada since cannabis was legalized in October 2018 through May 2025 are $25.2 billion.

Readers should note, though, that these figures from Statistics Canada are often adjusted over time. The current monthly sales figures are rated with a low level of accuracy. Previous sales figures for December, for example, showed sales at just under $500 million, but those figures were later adjusted downwards.

As an example, Statistics Canada shows $664.2 million in sales in Quebec in fiscal year 2024, while Quebec’s own figures show $741.5 million over this same period. Many of Stats Canada’s figures for Quebec for that period are rated “C”. Comparatively, Stats Canada’s total sales figures for Ontario’s match the $2.2 billion in sales reported by the OCS, and data from that time period for Ontario is mostly rated as “A” quality.

At the provincial level, unadjusted sales figures show Ontario, Canada’s largest province, continuing to dominate sales with $193.1 million in sales in May, up year-over-year from $185.2 million.

Alberta remains the second-highest province in terms of cannabis sales, with $87.7 million in May 2025, up from $77.8 million in May 2024.

BC nudged out Quebec for the third-highest cannabis sales with $71 million, up from $56.3 million in May 2024. Quebec’s cannabis sales in May 2025 were $66.8 million, up from $61.2 million.

After these top four provinces, which accounted for nearly 87% of cannabis sales in Canada, were, in order: Manitoba with $19.1 million in sales, Saskatchewan with $ 13.5 million, Nova Scotia with $11.4 million, Newfoundland and Labrador with $8.9 million, New Brunswick with $8.5 million, PEI with $2.3 million, and Yukon with $1.4 million. Sales figures are not available for the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
